[영어 첼린지 08] 수업시간에 유용한 표현 (5)

 

 

Push the boundary: 경계를 넓히다.

> He believes HMD displays will push the boundaries of games, enabling the most immersive experience possible.

> They want to know what is acceptable and then to push the boundary further.

 

More or less: 대략, 거의

> I have more or less finished the paper.

> She could earn $200 a month, more or less.

 

What is the missing gap to fill in? 

> Efforts were made to fill missing gaps with other sources of data.

 

Indulge: (특히 좋지 않다고 여겨지는 것을) 마음껏 하다.

> They went into town to indulge in some serious shopping.

> The inheritance enabled him to indulge in his passion for art.

 

Mortality rate / Fatality rate: 사망률

> Fatality rate for Covid-19 is low in Singapore.

 

Come to a consensus: 동의에 이르다.

> I think we've finally come to a consensus on our team's name.

 

Values quantity over quality: 질보다는 양이 중요하게 여기다.

The quantity of work is more important than the quality of work.

> I value quantity over quality

 

Head in the clouds:

Not being very focused; To be living in a fantasy (world)

To be out of touch with the everyday world and to be unrealistic because of it.

> He has his head in the clouds.

 

End up: 결국 (어떤 처지에) 처하게 되다. 

To become eventually

> How did you end up here? 어쩌다 여기까지 왔어?

> How did you end up in Singapore? 어쩌다 싱가폴까지 왔어?

> If you go on like this you will end up in prison. 

 

Envision: 마음속에 그리다

To imagine or expect that something is a likely or desirable possibility in the future

> They envision an equal society, free of poverty and disease.

> The company envisions adding at least five stores next year.

 

Vandalism: 공공기물 파손

Willful or malicious destruction or defacement of public or private property

> Vandalism is the action involving deliberate destruction of or damage to public or private property.

> An act of vandalism (공공기물 파손죄)

 

Underutilized: 충분히 활용되지 않다.

Not fully utilized

> Students integrate this input into how underutilized space could be reimagined and put to far better use.
